Area of a Ellipse Calculator
An ellipse (oval) is a circle stretched in one direction, so its area is π times the two half-axes. Its perimeter has no exact simple formula; we use Ramanujan's approximation, accurate to a tiny fraction of a percent for ordinary ovals.
A = π × a × b
Perimeter: P ≈ π(a+b)(1 + 3h/(10+√(4−3h))), h = (a−b)²/(a+b)² (Ramanujan)

How to find the area of a ellipse
Formula: A = π × a × b. Perimeter: P ≈ π(a+b)(1 + 3h/(10+√(4−3h))), h = (a−b)²/(a+b)² (Ramanujan).
- Measure every length in the same unit. Mixing feet and inches is the most common mistake; convert first (6 in = 0.5 ft).
- Put the numbers into the formula above. The calculator shows each substitution with your numbers.
- Area comes out in square units (ft², m²). If you need a different unit, open "Area in other units".
Questions people ask
I measured the full width and length.
Halve both. An oval rug 8 ft × 5 ft has a = 4, b = 2.5, so A = π × 4 × 2.5 ≈ 31.4 ft².
